Know exactly what’s in your pigment bottle 🧡

Every PMU pigment label lists CI numbers, but what do they actually mean? This science-based reference turns those codes into knowledge you can use. You’ll learn what each colourant is and how it behaves in the skin.

Created by Jasmine Diebelius, PMU educator, international judge and founder of PMUni. Every CI and CAS number has been checked against the Colour Index, EU cosmetic regulation data and manufacturer information.

What’s included

1. Colourant Master List (Edition 2, 2026)
A complete CI number reference covering more than 130 colourants: inorganic minerals, organic pigments, dyes, lakes and natural colourants. Each entry shows:

  • CI code and CAS number
  • Chemical class
  • Lightfastness rating
  • Solubility (insoluble, partial or soluble)
  • In-skin stability and practical notes

It also explains the difference between inorganic, organic, dye and lake colourants, what solubility means for longevity, how to read CI codes (including what the “:1” suffix really means), and the current EU and UK REACH position.

2. Visual Colourants Sheet
Your at-a-glance colour reference: the colourants you’ll actually find in today’s professional PMU pigments, shown as colour swatches by CI code. It includes every colourant used across two of the leading PMU pigment ranges.

  • Grouped by colour family: reds, oranges, yellows, black and white, greens, blues and violets
  • Each swatch labelled as organic, inorganic, lake or dye
  • Clear markers for laser-removal difficulty and REACH status

3. Colour Bias Guide
The same hue can heal completely differently. This guide places every pigment on the visual sheet on a cool-to-warm scale, so you can see:

  • Which reds lean blue and which lean yellow
  • Which yellows cool a mix and which warm it
  • Why carbon black and iron oxide black behave so differently in brows

Who it’s for

  • PMU artists who want to understand their pigments, not just use them
  • Students and trainees building a strong colour theory foundation
  • Educators looking for a clear, accurate teaching resource
  • Anyone who wants to read a pigment label with confidence
